Academic history

Primary School

I attended Alexanderbaai primary school from 1983 to 1989. I can't remember much about those years.
At around 1985 I started playing with the Logo programming language on some old Atari machine that our class collected money for and bought. I remember spending lots of time drawing pretty pictures with the turtle. I also wrote a silly geography quiz game.

High School

From 1990 to 1994 I spend most of my time in Garies, a small farming community in the heart of Namaqualand, where I tried to get educated. It was fun, but very isolated years. During those years I manage to get my hands on an old XT PC. I played a lot of games, but manage to teach myself the BASIC programming language. I wrote some software for the school and a cash register program for my father's take away shop.

B.Eng (Electric & Electronic)

After high school I was rescued by Stellenbosch. I studied electric & electronic engineering at the local university. I graduated in 1998, but went on to do my masters degree. During this time I discoverd the internet, C++, Linux and a lot of other things of no academic value :) I did my final year project under the guidance of prof. Johan du Preez. I studied speech processing techniques and build a real-time speaker recognition demonstrator. You can read the report online here.

M.Sc.Eng (Electronic)

After I got my B.Ing degree I felt adventerous and desided to do my masters. Once again it was under the guidence of prof. Johan du Preez. I was part of the digital signal processing (DSP) lab. I spend the first year (1999) studying background course material and investigating the effects that a high frequency (HF) transmission channel has on linear prediction coefficient cepstrum. The second year (2000) the focus shifted to speech enhancement using hidden Marcov models (HMM). In this year I also played a lot of online browser games (mostly Utopia and Dominian). I also helped to develop one of my own called Kingdoms. It is still active, but I'm not involved anymore. At the end of this year I was mostly done with the thesis, but I still had to conduct some experiments and finish the report. The third year (2001) I started working full time at Stone Three and tried to finish the outstanding work. I finally, with great joy, submitted the thesis in December. The oral examination and publication took place during February 2002. Right now I'm working on a page to present all the work I did for my masters. It should be done sometime before the end of the universe.
