Solar Eclipse

We were treated with a partial solar eclipse here in Cape Town on the 22nd of September. According to this news item on the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) website, the moon would cover about 61% of the sun at the maximum for observers in Cape Town.

I took the Friday afternoon off and enjoyed the eclipse while having a braai. I brought out my telescope, which I haven't used much during this Winter, to have a closer look.

We took a couple of pictures using our cellphones. We did this by positioning the camera lens close to the telescope's eyepiece. Not very scientific, but it does the job. The green look is caused by the sun filter. You don't want to look directly at the sun :)
